Talk:Complex portfolios
This possible new page was created by combining content from User:LadyGeek/Portfolio design and construction, and [[User talk:LadyGeek/Couch Potato portfolios|LadyGeek/Couch Potato portfolios]] (page deleted --LadyGeek 15:02, 17 January 2015 (MST)), plus some new development. The idea is to place all material on complex portfolios together on one page. In this scenario, there would not be a dedicated for Couch Potato portfolios, and the "complex portfolios" portion of "Portfolio design and construction" would be greatly reduced, with a "main page: Complex portfolios" mention. This accomplishes two things: 1- reduces the length, and complexity, of "Portfolio design and construction", which we know is way too long; 2- no need to constantly monitor what CPP is doing with his model portfolios and maintain a dedicated up to-date "Couch Potato portfolios" page in finiki. Instead we show his former complex portfolios here. So? --Quebec 07:48, 16 January 2015 (MST)
- Took a cut at helping out. On the fence as to whether the Examples: complex Couch Potato portfolios needs to be part of the article. While Simple index portfolios can be fairly standardized for many investors, once you get to complex portfolios I think we need to focus solely on theory and then refer reader to FWF for any discussion. There is no standard or common complex portfolio, the possibilities are endless -- FWF is example. --Peculiar Investor 09:05, 16 January 2015 (MST)
- The more I think about it, we want to keep this article as short and sweet as possible. The less said the better. We're not financial advisors and FWF exists for discussion of strategies. On the wiki we need to acknowledge the existence of the topic, but not draw attention to it. As someone who runs a complex portfolio, I find it ironic that I'm advocating this way. --Peculiar Investor 09:18, 16 January 2015 (MST)
- How about removing the all the examples then? Not sure what to do w/ the Couch Potato page ... (I run a semi-complex portfolio, with some individual stocks, some REITs, gold and RRBs, that I'm in the process of simplifying) --Quebec 10:40, 16 January 2015 (MST)
- Took another shot at it. Removed the Examples sections and tried to give guidance that FWF is the place for further education. Not sure if really neutral point of view and open to any and all wordsmithing to improve it. I do think it takes the article in the correct direction. --Peculiar Investor 11:30, 16 January 2015 (MST)
- Might want to keep either the notice, or the "want more" section. They partly say the same thing (join the forum). --Quebec 11:55, 16 January 2015 (MST)
- Went part way. Did some other rework. I'm liking the look of things, maybe time to post to the finiki editors lounge for feedback. After that, probably far enough developed to move into the main article space. --Peculiar Investor 12:40, 16 January 2015 (MST)
- OK, go ahead. And what about the Couch Potato page? Do we need one? --Quebec 12:56, 16 January 2015 (MST)
- Your page, you should post (need smilies). [[User talk:LadyGeek/Couch Potato portfolios|LadyGeek/Couch Potato portfolios]] (page deleted --LadyGeek 15:02, 17 January 2015 (MST)) for other question. --Peculiar Investor 13:16, 16 January 2015 (MST)
- I went farther. First, I removed the part about "not the work of financial advisors." That's highly contentious, as it directly challenges the credibility of financial advisors. With no other information, a new investor will believe a financial advisor before believing a forum member. Then, we teach them and they understand. Also, consider that one of the most senior FWF members is a financial advisor. I prefer "investing enthusiast" to describe positively the members who have a deep investing knowledge. Especially if they spend most of their holiday time posting in the forum and finiki. "Like-minded" encourages readers to join a forum that has the same focus as they do. --LadyGeek 20:33, 16 January 2015 (MST)
