Talk:Managing a windfall
Objective and length of the article.
If someone gets an unexpected windfall, such as a lottery win, they are likely going to overwhelmed with information and offers on what to to next. Having read the Bogleheads article that is the genesis for this article, I would suggest a step back is needed. This needs to be a short "Cole's Notes" type article that quickly summarizes the short-term steps and the longer term planning required. The Bogleheads article and the current version of this article have lots of good information and good intentions to help, however they are far too long and detailed to be helpful for someone who is already overwhelmed with information and offers. - I agree. Let's try to condense even more. --Quebec 12:55, 23 February 2023 (UTC)
- Would it make more sense to start from scratch, build an outline of the key section headers and then fill the sections out? It might be easier than starting with a full article and trying to condense it down? --Peculiar Investor 13:32, 23 February 2023 (UTC)
- Thinking further on this. In the finiki context could this be purely an outline of the essential steps to take and then provide links to articles such as Getting started, tax planning, paying down loans versus investing and managing debt, create or review your financial plan, etc. How much of the content from the Bogleheads article is duplication/rehash of what's already in our wiki? --Peculiar Investor 14:11, 23 February 2023 (UTC)
- Please take a look at what I've done this morning, which was a major reorganization. I don't think an outline is enough, there are many windfall-specific considerations to present.--Quebec 18:43, 23 February 2023 (UTC)
- Are we getting closer to adequate length? --Quebec 18:38, 7 October 2023 (UTC)
Yes, the length is adequate. Compare to Managing a windfall. --LadyGeek 11:32, 8 October 2023 (UTC)
- I've cut a few more words and some of the moralizing. Ready for main space? --Quebec 14:30, 7 March 2024 (UTC)
- In the "Emergency fund" section, why do you say "permanently" increase? Consider removing "permanently".
- The section "Monitor progress and make necessary adjustments" needs to have content. Use the Bogleheads wiki Managing a windfall for guidance. Once this is complete, I think the page will be ready for the main space.--LadyGeek 12:39, 8 March 2024 (UTC)
