Template talk:Personal finance navbox
The existing {{Personal finance sidebar}} seems unwieldy and long and in a number of instances is a second or third sidebar in an article. Using Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Layout and specifically Navigation header templates (sidebar templates) as a guide I thought it might be best to create an equivalent navigation footer template (navbox) and then deprecate the sidebar.
Before it gets wholesale applied to articles the groups and list items probably needs to be reviewed and improved. --Peculiar Investor 14:58, 21 February 2023 (UTC)
- The list of 'planning' articles in the navbox is long. The links between the articles are not super obvious. Maybe split the 'planning' list in two? Not sure exactly how. --Quebec 16:03, 21 February 2023 (UTC)
- I concur and have been struggling on how to construct the navbox because of it. The genesis was seeing some articles with three different sidebars which detract from reading the articles content. Thus the attempt to construct a navbox to replace the sidebar. We already have the Category:Personal finance to link these types of articles together. So maybe neither the {{Personal finance sidebar}} nor this navbox replacement are necessary? --Peculiar Investor 16:14, 21 February 2023 (UTC)
- Categories are not enough. Navboxes and sidebars are much more likely to be used for navigation by the casual reader, IMO. I've had a go at improving the navbox and added many articles which I deemed important enough. One issue is that some topics don't have an overview article, for example Education finances. So I've tried using the category page, like this: ([[Category:Education finances|Education finances]]), but that does not show up in the navbox. Help please! --Quebec 19:26, 23 February 2023 (UTC)
- I tried to simplify per Wikipedia's guidance that they should be kept small in size as a large template has limited navigation value. I shortened the group names and eliminated some lesser important articles (the Varia group). --Peculiar Investor 20:37, 23 February 2023 (UTC)
