Wikiproject Kansas
Hi there, writing to you because you are a member of the wikiproject kansas. created a GLAM (Galleries, Libraries, Archives, Museums) group for kansas, mailing list for topeka and a facebook page linked from here Wikipedia:Meetup/Topeka. would like to organize some more meetups at different historic sites in topeka (and even other places if we can find someone with a car), go there and take photos, collect information and work on the articles. It could be a great group event. please let me know what you think, and sign up on the mailing list if you like. Also if you know of GLAM sites anywhere in kansas, please add them to the list. Also I would like to organize a photo contest for Kansas. you can send me a mail if you like as well, my mail is on my user page.
thanks, James Michael DuPont (talk) 14:06, 9 February 2013 (UTC)
New Milwaukee CSA
There is a new designation for the Milwaukee-Racine-Waukesha CSA
http://www.whitehouse.gov/sites/default/files/omb/bulletins/2013/b13-01.pdf
Scroll down to page 105 and you'll find they have added 3 new MSAs to the CSA. This needs to be updated on all the population pages that reference the Milwaukee metro population. Thanks!Maximilian77 (talk) 04:24, 13 March 2013 (UTC)
- Thanks for the heads-up. The 2012 population estimates will be released on March 15, 2013. Yours aye, Buaidh 14:14, 13 March 2013 (UTC)
Just a heads up
I just accidentally wiped out some of your updates on this page, but I know that fixing all of them would take a long time on my end, so would you be able to do it yourself since you have the faster connection? If you're for it, I'm more than willing to start spliting it, because it will crash slow connections with its sheer size (it's the largest article on the site by a lot). Kevin Rutherford (talk) 00:23, 23 March 2013 (UTC)
- No problem. It will only take a couple minutes to fix. Yours aye, Buaidh 01:12, 23 March 2013 (UTC)
CSA moves
I undid one of your moves, to change back to styling per MOS, New Orleans–Metairie–Hammond, LA–MS combined statistical area, before I noticed that you changed more than the styling. The new name is not consistent with the article contents; if you want it to be about the new CSA, it needs to have contents updated. And it needs a reference.
In general, the styling is a mess, with many articles having the spaced-en-dash styling that the MOS specified with two-word names before the summer 2011 revision of MOS:DASH. But moving back to hyphens and capitals is not a good fix. See MOS:CAPS and MOS:DASH. We don't generally copy the styling of lists, especially not copying capitalization from items listed like headings that are not really proper names. That is, there's no reason to capitalize combined statistical area. These are just generic terms. And we connect names of cities that remain separate entities with en dash, to avoid things like the ambiguity of the tightly connected "Rock-North" in Little Rock-North Little Rock, AR Combined Statistical Area, etc.
So, there's a lot to be fixed... Dicklyon (talk) 01:12, 24 March 2013 (UTC)
- The Office of Management and Budget issued OMB Bulletin No. 13-01: Revised Delineations of Metropolitan Statistical Areas, Micropolitan Statistical Areas, and Combined Statistical Areas, and Guidance on Uses of the Delineations of These Areas on February 28, 2013. Since United States statistical areas have no meaning other than that defined by the OMB, I strongly feel that we should use the statistical area names exactly as defined by the OMB. If articles are about generic metropolitan areas, then they should not be given names that resemble official OMB statistical area names.

Poughkeepsie-Newburgh-Middletown, NY Metropolitan Statistical Area
In the metro page youve been editing, did you mistakenly remove Poughkeepsie? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.120.104.164 (talk) 04:38, 29 March 2013 (UTC)
- It is my sad duty to inform you that the Poughkeepsie-Newburgh-Middletown, NY Metropolitan Statistical Area is no more. When the the Office of Management and Budget issued OMB Bulletin No. 13-01: Revised Delineations of Metropolitan Statistical Areas, Micropolitan Statistical Areas, and Combined Statistical Areas, and Guidance on Uses of the Delineations of These Areas on February 28, 2013, it eliminated the Poughkeepsie-Newburgh-Middletown, NY Metropolitan Statistical Area and merged Dutchess County and Orange County into the New York-Newark-Jersey City, NY-NJ-PA Metropolitan Statistical Area.
- Actually, isn't that really now called the Dutchess County-Putnam County, NY Metropolitan Division within the New York-Newark-Jersey City, NY-NJ-PA Metropolitan Statistical Area and similar for Orange county? Vegaswikian (talk) 02:40, 7 April 2013 (UTC)
Undiscussed move
Did you not notice the currently open Requested move discussion at Talk:Statistical area? Were you aware of it, but forgot to comment? Or did you make this move without discussion because you figure your knowledge and insight are sufficiently superior that you didn't need to discuss the title again? Or is there some other explanation? --Orlady (talk) 20:56, 2 April 2013 (UTC)
- I'm sorry, but I was completely unaware that a new move discussion was begun on Talk:Statistical area. No one gave me a heads up, and I didn't bother to look for a discussion before I moved the article. I will be happy to move this article wherever consensus dictates. I think we have pretty much discussed these titles to death, and I'm not sure I will even bother to participate. With the new OMB definitions I have huge amounts of data to update. I have nothing but the greatest respect for you personally. Yours aye, Buaidh 23:08, 2 April 2013 (UTC)
- Thanks for 'splaining. I've been seeing your work on the new definitions and associated data -- not a small job! I continue to think that "statistical area" is a terrible name for the topic -- and that a better name could be created if we quit trying to treat the article like a dictionary definition and instead convert it into an article about the designation of "metro" areas in the U.S. Your thoughts on that matter would, of course, be helpful... Meanwhile, I hope that the data-insertion project goes smoothly for you. --Orlady (talk) 23:40, 2 April 2013 (UTC)

Template:User in the US
What is the possibility of adding an option "This user grew up in ..."? I'd do it, but can't figure out how to do so. Probably should invoke same categories as "former resident of". StevenJ81 (talk) 19:49, 5 April 2013 (UTC)
- The terms "grew up in", "was reared in", and "is from" are somewhat ambiguous. Do they mean:
- "is a native of"
- "is a native of, but no longer resides in"
- "is a former resident of"
- Yours aye, Buaidh 15:10, 6 April 2013 (UTC)
- My meaning was: "is a former resident, but no longer resides ... and spent most of childhood in, but is not a native of (because was not born there)". It is the bit about "spent most of childhood in but not born there" that is missing from the current options. (I plan to use it in a State template, not the US template.) Birmingham-Hoover Metropolitan Area
Your creation of redirects to invalid target reeks of POV and vandalism. I know that you have strong views on how the census bureau articles should be labeled, but redirecting into city articles is just wrong, especially where articles exist. Vegaswikian (talk) 02:38, 7 April 2013 (UTC)
- I'm afraid I don't understand your point. I'm attempting to work with 1098 U.S. statistical areas concurrently, and not everything gets done instantaneously, (nor always correctly the first time.) I will be happy to redirect any links you find inappropriate. We have hundreds of redlinks to resolve on the List of metropolitan areas of the United States. I would greatly appreciate your help with this. Yours aye, Buaidh 19:16, 7 April 2013 (UTC)
- In the case of the Birmingham, Alabama metropolitan area, there are numerous definitions of this urban area including two OMB defined statistical areas: the Birmingham-Hoover, AL Metropolitan Statistical Area and the Birmingham-Hoover-Talladega, AL Combined Statistical Area. I believe the title "Birmingham, Alabama metropolitan area" should link to either an article or article subsection about the metro area and its many definitions rather than arbitrarily to one of the two OMB definitions. Do you not agree?
- It is my intent to create such an article or article subsection for each of the 1098 U.S. statistical areas. I am a still-more-than-fully-employed senior citizen, so I get these done a rapidly as I can. Buaidh 19:48, 7 April 2013 (UTC)
- You can see my metro working link pages at User:Buaidh/Test, User:Buaidh/Test1, User:Buaidh/Test2. I update the link targets regularly as I work through the tables. Buaidh 20:38, 7 April 2013 (UTC)
- P.S. – It's rather petty to accuse editors of our stature of vandalism. Buaidh 01:08, 8 April 2013 (UTC)
- Red links are not bad! If you goal is to write articles, then that's fine but redirecting to a city article is not appropriate. Vegaswikian (talk) 04:58, 8 April 2013 (UTC)

Who is going to search for these?
Who is going to type into search something like Winona, Minnesota micropolitan area...and why does the redirect go to a section that doesn't exist in the article? --Onorem♠Dil 15:50, 9 April 2013 (UTC)
- The Winona, Minnesota micropolitan area is included in the List of metropolitan areas of the United States. The United States Office of Management and Budget has designated Winona County, Minnesota as the Winona, MN Micropolitan Statistical Area (see the List of Core Based Statistical Areas). I will insert the subsection #Micropolitan Statistical Area into the Winona County article as soon as I can. (I have more than 2000 of these to create.)
- To your question, anyone searching for "Winona" or "micropolitan area" can find the micropolitan area link. Yours aye, Buaidh 16:05, 9 April 2013 (UTC)
- Who is going to type "Winona, Minnesota micropolitan area" into a search. Why create redirects for a search term that isn't likely to be used. Whatever. I guess it doesn't hurt anything. Just seems like a massive waste. Glad to know that you have thousands of them to go through. --Onorem♠Dil 16:19, 9 April 2013 (UTC)
- Thank you so much!!! These links are created primarily as table links rather than search links. I suspect the New York metropolitan area may be used somewhat more frequently than the Winona, Minnesota micropolitan area. Buaidh 16:37, 9 April 2013 (UTC)

County lists
Hi, I just wanted to say great work on List of United States counties and county-equivalents. That's something that WP has needed for a long time, and thank you for your excellent effort on it. I'm sure that if you expanded the lead with information from the county (United States) and County statistics of the United States articles it could become a Featured List. You could also definitely merge List of the least populous counties in the United States to your list since it's redundant. Reywas92Talk 22:02, 10 April 2013 (UTC)
- Thank you. The list is enormous at 694,135 bytes, so I've tried to keep extraneous information to a minimum. The sortable table is actually quite efficient, and it should be easy to update each March when the U.S. Census estimates are released. Yours aye, Buaidh 22:15, 10 April 2013 (UTC)
RMs
Can you put all your recent metro area RMs together as a multiple RM, or at least do so going forward? It's tiresome to have to weigh in at each one separately and they're going to exacerbate the backlog with duplicated discussions. Thanks,--Cúchullain t/c 15:30, 11 April 2013 (UTC)
- Each of these articles have individual as well as common issues. I'm not sure why I should make it easier for you to grandly oppose these moves. Buaidh 16:00, 11 April 2013 (UTC)
- You're making the same justification at every article, so we're just repeating ourselves across them all. It would be far less demanding to discuss them in one place rather than repeat the same things across numerous articles.--Cúchullain t/c 16:58, 11 April 2013 (UTC)

- Hi Buaidh. Due to the relocation of multiple comments at Talk:Mobile metropolitan area#Requested move I've found it necessary to close the thread as No consensus; it's impossible to glean a valid consensus from a discussion in which the majority of commentators were !voting on something else (namely, individual page renames, rather than a mass page move). Doing so indicates no disapproval of the process, and I'd encourage you, if you wish, to create a new move discussion for the topics in question. I'm sorry for effectively forcing a restart of several established discussions, but to my mind it seemed the correct and most efficient route towards resolving the issue. Dab pages
Hi Buaidh. Regarding your recent creation of disambiguation pages, you don't need to create them when there's a primary topic and only one other (ostensibly) ambiguous article. If anything, they just make the second article harder to get to when the same purpose could be served by a hatnote - see at Miami metropolitan area. In cases where a disambiguation page is called for, please make sure you format them correctly according to MOS:DAB, with the primary topic on top. Thanks,--Cúchullain t/c 18:50, 24 April 2013 (UTC)
- Where do you think I am not following the Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Disambiguation pages? Buaidh 18:54, 24 April 2013 (UTC)
- You weren't following WP:DABORDER on any of the ones I looked at, Miami metropolitan area (disambiguation), Jacksonville metropolitan area (disambiguation), Augusta metropolitan area (disambiguation), and Dayton metropolitan area (disambiguation). The primary topic goes above the other entries (and the article that's currently located at that title, or has the title redirected to it, is the de facto primary topic).--Cúchullain t/c 19:03, 24 April 2013 (UTC)
- You are correct. Buaidh 19:21, 24 April 2013 (UTC)

- I have two and one half times as many edits as you and correspondingly two and one half times as many mistakes. I'm pretty much a boy scout. If I make a mistake, its usually due to senility rather than subversion.
- I try to avoid creating disambiguation pages, but the anti-WP:USPLACE cabal has created a huge mess for those of us who update United States Census Bureau and Office of Management and Budget data. I hope its all worth it to you folks. Buaidh 21:51, 24 April 2013 (UTC)
- Haha, I'm totally using that line. Obviously ain't nobody immune to mistakes. As far as the dab pages go, they're actually detrimental when there are only two ambiguous articles and one of them's the primary topic, it's more clicks to get to the second article, which should be avoided. Either way, I've never been convinced that these "micropolitan areas", which are really "Micropolitan Statistical Areas" in the only sources that talk about them, are noteworthy under any name, let alone the made up names you've given them. They appear in virtually no sources outside of the primary sources - government statistics. I'm even less convinced that someone typing in, for instance, "Miami metropolitan area" is looking for a hopelessly obscure statistical entity in Oklahoma, and that we should disregard the common sense arrangement to accommodate those hypothetical readers. Unfortunately common sense isn't all that common at Wikipedia.--Cúchullain t/c 01:31, 25 April 2013 (UTC)

Hi Buaidh. From the Wikipedia:Wiknic page, it appears you mentioned a tentative plan for an Arvada Wiknic on June 22, 2013. Since that was three weeks ago, might I suggest you go ahead and start the meetup page for that particular location so that others might have a place to interact without leaving notes on the main Wikipedia:Wiknic page. Thanks. N2e (talk) 16:16, 7 May 2013 (UTC)
- Yes, you can start a new page at Wikipedia:Meetup/Boulder/Wiknic, and maybe borrow much of the content from the previous Wikipedia:Meetup/Boulder/June 2012.--Pharos (talk) 19:49, 8 May 2013 (UTC)
- Please see Wikipedia:Meetup/Colorado/Wiknic/2013. Buaidh 14:09, 11 May 2013 (UTC)

Hi! Quick Question
Hey! I just have a quick comment, I believe someone is vandalizing the list of Combined Statistical Areas in the United States, as according to the US Census Bureau, St Louis is 15th, followed by Tampa, Cleveland, and Denver. Could you revert the page? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.220.199.124 (talk) 23:19, 14 May 2013 (UTC)
- The List of Combined Statistical Areas is currently correct. Buaidh 15:22, 16 May 2013 (UTC)

Template:Colorado
Please don't add Colorado to articles about individual places in the state (e.g. Thede Farmhouse or Cascade Boy Scout Camp); like other navboxes, it's meant for placement on the articles that it links, not for placement on every article about a location in the state. Nyttend (talk) 00:10, 23 May 2013 (UTC)
- Each of these articles link to Colorado and to a Colorado county. I'm not sure where you draw a line. Buaidh 02:29, 23 May 2013 (UTC)

Hunting for embedded outlines
Hi Buaidh,
I'm looking for outlines embedded in articles.
I've run across a number of these over the years. One example is the Outline of fencing, which used to be part of the fencing article.
If you know about or spot any structured general topics lists in articles, please let me know (on my talk page).
Another thing you might find are articles that are comprised mostly of lists (without "List of" in the title). If you come across any of these, please report them to me on my talk page. I'd sure like to take a look at them.
Happy hunting.
I look forward to "hearing" from you. Sincerely, The Transhumanist 06:56, 11 June 2013 (UTC)

Hey Buaidh
I'm sending you this because you've made quite a few edits to the template namespace in the past couple of months. If I've got this wrong, or if I haven't but you're not interested in my request, don't worry; this is the only notice I'm sending out on the subject :).
So, as you know (or should know - we sent out a centralnotice and several watchlist notices) we're planning to deploy the VisualEditor on Monday, 1 July, as the default editor. For those of us who prefer markup editing, fear not; we'll still be able to use the markup editor, which isn't going anywhere.
What's important here, though, is that the VisualEditor features an interactive template inspector; you click an icon on a template and it shows you the parameters, the contents of those fields, and human-readable parameter names, along with descriptions of what each parameter does. Personally, I find this pretty awesome, and from Monday it's going to be heavily used, since, as said, the VisualEditor will become the default.
The thing that generates the human-readable names and descriptions is a small JSON data structure, loaded through an extension called TemplateData. I'm reaching out to you in the hopes that you'd be willing and able to put some time into adding TemplateData to high-profile templates. It's pretty easy to understand (heck, if I can write it, anyone can) and you can find a guide here, along with a list of prominent templates, although I suspect we can all hazard a guess as to high-profile templates that would benefit from this. Hopefully you're willing to give it a try; the more TemplateData sections get added, the better the interface can be. If you run into any problems, drop a note on the Feedback page.
Thanks, Okeyes (WMF) (talk) 21:52, 28 June 2013 (UTC)

Sergeant (E4)
I created the USAF Sergeant (E4) userbox the way I wanted it for my own use. When you edited it previously, I reverted your edit, which should have given you the idea that I did not want it that way. If you want a userbox with larger stripes, please make your own... GWFrog (talk) 00:52, 14 November 2013 (UTC)
- I apologize for modifying your userbox User:GWFrog/UBX/sergeant. Since you placed it on Wikipedia:Userboxes/USAF, I assumed that it was designed for public use. You may wish to update the Wiki markup to:
{{userbox
| border-c = #a4b4ff
| border-s = 1
| id =
| id-c = #a4b4ff
| info = This user was once a Sergeant (E4) in the United States Air Force.
| info-a = center
| info-c = white
| info-fc = black
| info-s = 8
| nocat = {false}
| usercategory = <includeonly>Wikipedians who served in the United States Air Force</includeonly>
}}<noinclude></noinclude>
- Since we are of similar vintage, you may also be interested in Template:User sexagenarian or Template:User old. Best of luck, Buaidh 16:42, 14 November 2013 (UTC)
- Yes, if the user box is in someone's personal user space, as is the case with "User:GWFrog" then others should leave it alone. If a user box is under the user profile "User:UBX" then that is the generic userbox user space and you can edit it, but keep in mind it will effect how it looks on other people's user spaces. User:UBX/AFJROTC LTC
Hello, you added the category "People in the United States Air Force" to the above-named userbox. This is in accurate. Help creating page?
Hello again, Buaidh! I've been pretty absent from Wikipedia this year, and upon return discovered that the process for starting pages seems to have changed. In August I created draft text for William A. Reiners (latest addition to the list of Eminent Ecologists) in my Sandbox and I'd like to move it forward as a stub so it can get improvements from others. I'm so rusty I have to look up how to do refs again! You've been interested in my projects in the past, so I'm hoping you can give me a nudge in the right direction. Thanks, as ever! Disambiguation link notification for December 11
Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited William A. Reiners, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Knox College (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQTemplate:* Join us at the DPL WikiProject.
